The Christian Service Program at Our Redeemer Lutheran exists to provide our students the opportunity to put into practice the command of Jesus to “Love one another as I have loved you” through practical service to the people of Our Redeemer and the community of Delavan and its’ surrounding area.
Community service is the idea of giving your efforts willingly and free of charge to an individual or organization that benefits from your help. Community service is not doing our chores (that’s being part of being a family) nor is it helping a business. Community service means that you are helping those without the resources to help themselves, or helping a non-profit agency.
Community service hours are recorded on the Christian Service Verification Form.
The following sections describe the 6th – 8th grade community service requirements, as well as the James S. Breytung Service Award.
How much community service is required?
- 6th grade: 10 hours (minimum)
- 7th grade: 15 hours (minimum)
- 8th grade: 20 hours (minimum)
When can I complete my community service?
Completion of community service can take place during the summer prior to entering 6th, 7th, or 8th grade or during the school year. All documentation of community service must be turned in on or before May 1st of the specific school year.

What happens if I do not complete my community service requirement during the school year?
At the end of the year students will receive a “Pass/Fail” on their report card indicating whether or not they completed their service hours for the year. Students may “catch up” with service hours the following year unless they are in 8th grade. Students who have completed service hours may be considered more favorably for available 8th grade scholarships. Non-completion of service hours in 8th grade will be indicated on the student’s Our Redeemer permanent record.
